Engineering Update

**Transmitter Power Increase**
—————————————————
- Last week we increased the power of the signal we are transmitting. Thanks to Clive Glover and Nik Fox for doing most of the work on this and liaising with Ofcom to get it done. We’ve already heard of improvements all over the place which is great news. Please let us know if you notice if the signal has improved or is reaching further.

**Soundcards & Levels**
—————————————————
- We’ve switched to the new soundcards in both studios (a few weeks ago). This will allow us to finally do voice tracking!

- There’s been issues with the sound levels, particularly in Studio A. These have been reset again (as of 27/04/19 evening). PLEASE don’t fiddle with the settings, especially on the PC, the new cards are more sensitive than the old ones so changing this will have bad consequences to others’ subsequent recordings as found this week!

- Resetting the levels includes balancing the trim pots on the desk with the PC settings so if you need to lower the volume on a particularly loud cart, just pull the fader back a little (not the trim pot). The calibrated settings for the trim pots are below in case you want to double check they are in the right place before you start.

- Apologies to everyone who put the time and effort into recording shows last week that have come out distorted. To ensure this doesn’t happen again, I’ve disabled access to the control panel and audio settings on the Myriad PC’s so the levels can’t be changed there. As mentioned above, I would always recommend checking the trim pots are in the correct place before you do any recording and maybe doing a quick test record to be doubly sure.

**New Headphones**
—————————————————
- We have new style headphones in the presenter seats. They are on cable winders so the cables don’t get caught under the chairs! Of course as ever, look after them as if they were your own.

- Almost all of the old headphones (the Bayerdynamics) have had their pads and foam inserts replaced. I have noticed that one of the foam inserts had come out but there i no sign of it. If this happens, please keep the foam and I can refit it (I have stronger adhesive now!). I’ve ordered new foam inserts for it but its frustrating when they’d only just been replaced.

**Phoneline**
—————————————————
- We are in the process of switching phone provider which should save the station a fair bit of money in ongoing costs which is good.

**Other**
—————————————————
- There’s tonnes of other things that have happened, are happening or on the list to happen. Let me know if you want more details on what we are doing or want to help with some technical stuff.

- As ever, please report any issues to engineering@radioverulam.com . Using Facebook or WhatsApp is ok but does not guarantee that we will see it. Emails are also much better for helping us to catalogue & find old faults and fixes.

**Sound Level Desk Settings**
—————————————————
As mentioned above, here are the new settings for the trim Pots (red knobs at the top, see image).

Desk Trim Pots

Desk Trim Pots

    4 Myriad output channels (‘Playout 1 to 4’) - trim pots at +4 (2 o’clock)

    Presenter & Guest Mics - trim pots at 0 (12 o’clock)

Studio B

    4 Myriad output channels (‘Playout 1 to 4’) - trim pots at +2 (1 o’clock)

     Presenter & Guest Mics - trim pots at 0 (12 o’clock)

(Myriad seems to do some boosting or normalisation when importing files into it. If anyone has had any experience with this or knows more information, please let us know.)
