We all have a favourite song. Or a piece of music associated with a particular memory. And there’s growing evidence that music can improve the quality of life for people living with dementia.
At Music for my Mind, we want to raise awareness of the positive effects of music for people affected by dementia. We aim to improve the well-being of people living with dementia and their family, friends and carers by making personalised music widely available as an affordable therapy in dementia care (e.g. to reduce reliance on drug treatments, manage anxiety or combat depression). We are working to achieve this through research and technological development.
We are currently conducting a study in participating homes throughout Hertfordshire, creating and delivering personalised playlists to people living with dementia and looking at ways to measure the effect that music has on the listeners over time. Backed by findings from this research, and our pilot study (you can watch our short video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KTgAs1sKHs), we are currently developing a technological solution, that will allow people to easily create a personalised playlist for a loved one living with dementia.
