Sunday, Waterstones book shop in St Peters Street has teamed up with St Albans Art Society to hold a 'Local Artists Day'. The art society will have 9 excellent artists, including Sue Llewelyn Elvidge who created the St Albans Trophy artwork. The artists will be showing techniques using various media such as watercolour, acrylics, calligraphy and mosaics giving demonstrations during the day upstairs in the store. The idea is to have a fun day and to show the public/customers 'how it is done' and to encourage them to visit the exhibition just round the corner in Dagnall Street!
Sunday 11am, Old Albanian's Rugby Ground, Harpenden Road, St Albans. A team made up of contestants from BBC One’s extreme game show “Total Wipeout”, will be rising to the challenge and competing in the first “It’s a Knockout” event to be held by the National Association for Colitis & Crohn’s Disease (NACC) to raise awareness of Crohn’s and Colitis. Colitis and Crohns are two conditions that can strike anyone at any age, although teenagers and young adults are most at risk. Open to the general public on the day from 11.30am (11am for teams) to around 4pm, spectators, cheerleaders, supporters and families with younger children will be able to enjoy the excitement of the games and other activities such as bouncy castles, face painting, side stalls, BBQ and refreshments. Europe’s top Tom Jones Tribute act, Billy Lee, will also perform after the games. Entry for spectators is only £3 per adult with free entry for OAPs, the disabled and children under 16 (who must be accompanied by an adult).

Sunday 2pm and 4pm, Marlborough School, Watling Street, St Albans. St Albans Symphony Orchestra is inviting children to take part in a whirlwind musical tour by going Around the World in 80 Minutes. The concert will feature music from film favourite The Lion King alongside colourful classics that include Finlandia by Sibelius, national dances from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet and Grieg’s Hall of the Mountain King. Children are encouraged to play an active part – by dressing-up as their favourite country and meeting the musicians during the interval to try out their instruments. As usual, members of the orchestra will be wearing fancy dress, too. Tickets: £1 for a child with at least one well behaved adult who each has to pay £10 in case they are naughty and break something!

Jacqui, who has one of the finest pedigrees of any jazz artiste as the daughter of the late Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine, is performing at Marlborough Road Methodist Church. Her Concerts in Churches programme will include such evergreens as Blue Moon and among her new songs will be The Man which she co-wrote with her father. Marlborough Road Methodist Church is one of seven churches nationwide to host the new concerts. Wednesday 1pm St Peter's Church, St Albans. International 'cellist Anatole Liebermann will be coming from Paris to play a selection of pieces accompanied by Alissa Firsova, who is well known locally and internationally as a pianist and composer. She has been commissioned to write a piece for the Proms on Saturday 14 August in the Albert Hall. As part of their programme at St Peter's Church they will play some solos and duos, including Beethoven Sonata No 4 for cello and piano, Schumann's Five Folk Pieces and two pieces by Alissa's mother Elena Firsova "For Alissa" and "Homage a Canisy" for 'cello and piano and others. The concert will have a retiring collection in aid of Grove House.

The 2nd Harpenden Beer & Cider Festival closed its doors on Saturday 12 June after a very successful two and a half days of serving a wide variety of beer, real cider, and perry, plus a selection of bottled beers from all over the world.

Sleep rough so others don’t have to – take part in the ‘Sleep Easy’
YMCA Central Herts is a local charity providing accommodation to 123 local young homeless people every night in Welwyn Garden City. They’re looking for people to sleep rough for a night to raise much needed funds and awareness of the issue.
The event will take place on 30th January at the Galleria in Hatfield. Alongside many local people, Camilla Dallerup (2008’s Strictly Come Dancing champion and GMTV’s fitness guru) and her fiancé Kevin Sacre (Hollyoaks actor) will be sleeping rough for the night. There will also be visits from Grant Shapps MP and Kim Langley, Welwyn Hatfield’s mayor. Some YMCA residents will also be taking part to help bring a real-life perspective to the issues that homeless young people face.

Saturday 7:30pm St Albans Bach Choir, St Albans Cathedral. The choir performs Mozart’s unfairly neglected Davide Penitente and Britten’s sparkling cantata St Nicolas which is wonderful and immediate in appeal and has seasonal appropriateness in preparation for Christmas. Boy choristers from St Albans Cathedral Choir and girl choristers from the Abbey Girls’ Choir will be providing music from above when they form the Gallery Choir in the Britten work. Thursday 7:30pm, Library of St Albans School. Having won the Royal Overseas League Ensemble Prize, the St James' Quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon) have just appeared on the South Bank and have a Wigmore Hall recital next year. It is a familiar local landmark with its distinctive blue face, illuminated at night, and is older than the tower that holds it, having been presented to the church in 1842.

Ali is half way through a three year study of wetland habitats, specialising in the water vole population at the nearby wetlands at Kings Mead. Conservation of the habitats that concern her studies is also vital for the well-being of many of our favourite bird species. Her talk promises to give us a fascinating insight into the biodiversity of some of our local habitats.
